16 Baby Registry Items You’ll Actually Use

One of the funnest parts of pregnancy is making your baby registry. Shopping for all the cute things, doing research on strollers, and planning out all the details for your little one's arrival. In the midst of that excitement, creating your registry can get very overwhelming. I mean, there is a LOT of baby stuff out there. There's also no real way to know what your baby will like or what will work for your family. Getting all the baby goods is a lot of trial and error.

I learned this lesson with my first born, and I'll likely learn it again with baby number 2. One thing I can say is that there are definitely items that you need that you'll absolutely want to have on your registry. I'm no expert, but I've gathered 16 items that I think are must-have products you'll actually use. There are many variations and options of every item, of course, but hopefully this list will give you an idea of what types of things to add to your list. I purposely did not include any medication, diapers, or clothing; I just rounded up some gear and equipment you may not think of.

1. A Bassinet

Baby needs somewhere to sleep, and they'll likely be in your bedroom for the first few months. A bassinet is an easy option and can be used later for travel or naps! I'm excited to try this one - it has great reviews and is an affordable option.

2. Muslin Blankets

I'll be honest - I never really got the hang of swaddling with my first baby, but I still loved having muslin swaddle blankets. They are so lightweight (perfect for summer babies - like mine) and convenient. They're basically all purpose blankets, and if you're not unskilled like me, they're perfect for wrapping your little babe when it's sleep time. I grabbed these; I'm here for the tie dye trend.

3. Bathtub

Babies gotta bathe! With Jackson, we had one of those big sponges for the sink. We ended up getting a tub because the sponge wasn't super functional. This is the one I got for baby #2 - it's basic but not a complete eyesore.

4. Lounge Pillow

Jackson LIVED on his Boppy lounger when he was a newborn. Lounge pillows are so convenient and cozy for baby. I got this Boppy version this time around. Can't go wrong with a Boppy!

5. Bouncer/Swing

This one honestly is a hit or miss. We had a swing for Jackson, and he didn't really like it. So we're trying out a bouncer for this baby - this is the one I picked. I wanted something affordable, in case he hates it. I still think a swing or bouncer of some sort is definitely worth registering for!

6. Baby Monitor

You may not need a monitor right away if baby will be sleeping in your room, but you will need it eventually. It's a must have, so add it to your registry and get it early so you don't have to worry about it down the line. We've tried a few, and currently have this one and I've had ZERO issues with it.

7. Carseat/Stroller System

I know, this one's obvious. But I'm adding it because I recommend getting a SET rather than separate pieces. It's more affordable and all comes together, perfectly matched. We had a Graco system the first time, and it was ok, but I went for something sleeker and more lightweight for little guy #2. This is the set I got.

8. Formula

This was a lesson I learned the hard way when Jackson was born. I hadn't bought any formula, and we ended up needing it on night one of being home; not making that mistake again. I recommend getting a tub/bottle of whatever formula you choose, even if you're planning on breastfeeding. Trust me, you're better safe than sorry. I got this from Earth's Best - amazing brand that I'm 100% comfortable feeding my little.

9. Bath Set

This one is kind of self explanatory too, but I recommend getting a SET rather than separate items. One - it's probably cheaper. Two - everything is the same brand, so if baby has a reaction, you won't have to guess which brand/product is causing the irritation. This set has great reviews and I trust it for sensitive newborn skin.

10. Velcro Swaddles

Velcro swaddles were a LIFESAVER for me after Jackson was born. I could never get him wrapped snug enough in a regular swaddle blanket. These have amazing reviews and are easy on the wallet!

11. Changing Pad

This might be something not everyone ends up using, but I definitely think it's a must have registry item. You'll more than likely change your baby all over the house, but it's nice to have a designated spot for it. I got this pad for baby boy.

12. Bottles

You gotta get them. Even if you have zero plans to bottle feed, GET SOME. You're better off having them and not needing them than needing them and not having them. I absolutely love these; used them for Jackson in the beginning and bought more for this baby too!

13. Sound Machine

I HIGHLY recommend a sound machine. We didn't have one for Jackson; we use an iPad and played lullaby music. But I wish we would've just used a sound machine! We got 2 for this baby - that's how serious I am about it. The Hatch has amazing reviews and I love that it pairs with your smartphone.

14. Activity Gym

I think this is such a great thing to have from the get-go. It gives baby somewhere to hang out and do tummy time, explore various toys, and it will keep them entertained through the first several months. We got this one for baby boy and I'm so excited!

15. Grooming Kit

This one sounds obvious, but it can be easy to forget about. You'll need at least some sort of nail clippers or file and a hairbrush. This kit is so affordable and it's all you need at the beginning.

16. Carrier/Wrap

Babies need to be on you, so make it hands-free with a carrier! There are SO MANY carrier and wrap options out there, so definitely do your research and find what will work best for you. I never liked using a wrap - it was time-consuming and not really very comfortable for me. I have this carrier that I started using with Jackson and I loved it, so I kept it for baby #2!

There are so many more things that are worth putting on your registry, but I think this is a great list of must-haves that are practical and will make your life easier. I hope you found this list helpful and let me know your thoughts in the comments!
